Enkang Women Group Capacity Building/ Training

We officially kickstarted our 3-days training on beadwork aspects such as: color coding, finishing, product diversification etc.

The Enkang’ Women group in Musenke (under the Enkang’ model for Gender Equality & Climate Resilience by SASAL), Kajiado County is a legally registered group with 63 women members. In a bid to empower these women financially in a sustainable way, we are training them to sharpen their beading skills, financial literacy (to ensure they manage their business model efficiently) and on entrepreneurship skills (to ensure sustainability of the business).

Prior to this, these group made several batches of products that SASAL managed to sell since September 2023 & deposited the proceeds to the women’s group bank account! .

The empowerment program is geared towards promoting #genderequality through empowering women financially hence restoring their personal power, confidence to resist mistreatment and reduce over dependence on their male counterparts hence able to step in to counter harmful decisions e.g. Female genital mutilation, early marriages, as they themselves can be able to provide for their children without depending on their spouses.

Women from this group are also building #climateresilience by using the income-profit from their beadwork business to dig water bunds, establish kitchen gardens etc.

Supporting Other Local NGO’s

Earlier today, we got to witness the launch of the @nashumufoundation in Committee area, Magadi ward.

SASAL is excited & proud to welcome this amazing women-led organization working on the empowerment of Maasai women & girls as well as offer our unwavering support towards its seamless operations!

We supported through providing 60 girls with a school term (3months) worth of sanitary towels!

Congratulations to @nashumufoundation once again and thanks for inviting SASAL

Bonn, Germany ; Meeting of the Subsidiary Bodies 60, UN Climate Change Conference 2024.

We are thrilled to have for the first time as a delegation of 3 taken part in the Bonn Climate Change Conference 2024 Week 1!

We were there for 1 specific reason; Conversations on loss and damage.

Here is what we took part in:

1. Participating in negotiations that touched the loss and damage topic.
2. Engaged with country negotiators (Kenya) to learn more about the processes and how we can integrate our position into the country’s.
3. Third Glasgow dialogue- For 2 days, made an intervention as a youth-led NGO.
4. Our side event at the Bonn Climate Camp: Screening our documentary on flooding & Climate Justice song.
5. Side events: Loss and damage focused to learn on best practices, locally led responses, get more knowledge on the topic.

It was extremely crucial that other members of our organization are exposed to such high level decision making platforms to inform and ensure the success of our advocacy program! We are glad that we got the chance to have them learn in-person

Thanks to @oxfaminafrica for your support.

Our CEO Mana also got an opportunity to make an intervention at the Third Glasgow dialogue at the SB60. See below.

The biggest challenge we encountered & that costed us a lot was transportation considering the roads were impassable – our company car wouldn’t make it so we had to incur costs of fuelling a 4*4 vehicle & hiring a motorcycle !

ADVOCACY: CLIMATE JUSTICE SUPER CUP #PASTORALISTAWAKE

SASAL Climate Justice Super Cup-Toning’oo olosho lang’ campaign under our Pastoralist Awake; a common voice and agenda program kickstarted yesterday -22/04/2024

‼️The Climate Justice Super Cup will cover all the football teams around Magadi Ward, Kajiado West Sub-county- a total of 10teams, more than 200 pastoralist youths will come together for a common agenda: Climate Justice 💯

This comes few days after the launch of our new climate justice song in Maa Language: Toning’o that will be used to create awareness & inspire a movement 🔥

#toningoolosholang #climatejustice #climatechange #indigenous #community #advocacy

ADVOCACY; First Ever Climate Justice Song in a Local Dialect!!

Our first advocacy tool- a climate justice song dubbed ‘Toning’o’- meaning Listen! Sang by 3 Maasai local artists

As a grassroot organization working with the indigenous pastoral communities in Kenya, we noted with great concern the lack of their engagement in climate decision making spaces hence their needs ignored. In addition, these communities also lack awareness on climate justice & the appropriate channels to attain it despite being amongst those worst hit by the impacts of #climatechange

We therefore resorted to, through our advocacy program dubbed “Pastoralists Awake; a common voice and agenda” start an intensive internal awareness creation phase to first of all inform the community on climate justice, before strategising on how to effectively claim it. Our aim is to create a movement of a well-informed, knowledgeable pastoral community capable of working towards climate justice.

In particular, we are working towards reparations for the historical losses & damages our communities have experienced & therefore aligning our campaign along the loss and damage fund!

CLIMATE JUSTICE ADVOCACY #PATORALISTAWAKE

Since last year, we embarked on a very ambitious advocacy project targeting 3 maa counties; Kajiado, Narok & Samburu. We envisioned a lot, stemming from the lack of awareness on climate justice and hence their exclusion in important decision making spaces & in the creation, design, of important funding instruments meant to compensate communities like ours for the losses & damages they’ve experienced historically as a result of the #climatecrisis

‼️We failed to flag it off last year, felt demoralized but didn’t give up!! We started again this year, completely halting all our field operations to ensure no stone is left unturned!

📝Luckily, we were well received & welcomed by our leaders who showed great interest in listening & learning about this particular initiative which they later embraced. We particularly appreciate the support of our deputy governor (Kajiado) @h.emartinmoshisho who walked the journey with us from day 1.

We are excited to finally launch our advocacy program: “Pastoralists Awake; a common voice & agenda” & unveiling our first advocacy tool (climate justice song) aimed at creating internal awareness within our communities. It envisions a well-informed pastoral community on matters #climatejustice & hence their enhanced & meaningful participation in the #climatediscourse & decision making💯

Baby steps, but let’s dive straight into it🙌📣
