Flood Response; {Capacity Building}-Training the affected Community on Risk Management Plan and Understanding of Effective Loss Mitigation /Reduction

We had a very successful training today with the Community of Konei, Entasopia, Magadi ward, who have been gravely affected by the flooding situation last month.

After our relief intervention that involved supply of food, bedding and sanitary towels, we sat down to train the people at risk areas- mapping out homesteads along the newly formed river to develop a risk management plan as well as understand how to effectively mitigate/reduce the losses from such unprecedented events.

This involved conducting a SWOT analysis with them, brainstorming on future early interventions, as well as the formation of a village disaster management committee to coordinate disaster & risk reduction efforts at the levels.

We look forward to a more climate-resilient, informed community that has the capacity to anticipate & respond to weather extremes.

Flood Response; Relief Support/Distribution

With the support of the Urgent Action Fund, we managed to provide relief support in form of dry food supplies, mattresses & beddings to flood-affected families in Entasopia, Magadi ward, Kajiado County.

This comes after River Entasopia broke its banks, forming a completely new & permanent river passing through homesteads, farms, schools & hospitals wrecking a havoc resulting in massive losses and damages .

Through this relief exercise, we reached 100 families 70% of which are women-led. Earlier on, through our social media fundraising campaign, we managed to aid 60 of the same households with food supplies, clothing & sanitary towels!

Since most of the girls from families affected by floods are already in school, we decided to also reach them there.
Our team distributed Sanitary towels to girls of Paterson Memorial Secondary School in Olkiramatian, .Magadi ward, Kajiado County.
130 girls received sanitary towels that will last them a full school term (3 months) ensuring they are confident & don’t miss out on any of their classes or compromise on their hygiene by not changing the towels as required due to its unavailability.

On the same, Oldonyokie Secondary were not left behind;
183 Girls got Sanitary towels to last them 3 months!!

Check all out below.

We thank all our supporters for enabling us to provide this support to the flood victims and wish the affected a quick transition back to their normal lives! SASAL will continue supporting however we can.

Enkang Women Group Capacity Building/ Training

We officially kickstarted our 3-days training on beadwork aspects such as: color coding, finishing, product diversification etc.

The Enkang’ Women group in Musenke (under the Enkang’ model for Gender Equality & Climate Resilience by SASAL), Kajiado County is a legally registered group with 63 women members. In a bid to empower these women financially in a sustainable way, we are training them to sharpen their beading skills, financial literacy (to ensure they manage their business model efficiently) and on entrepreneurship skills (to ensure sustainability of the business).

Prior to this, these group made several batches of products that SASAL managed to sell since September 2023 & deposited the proceeds to the women’s group bank account! .

The empowerment program is geared towards promoting #genderequality through empowering women financially hence restoring their personal power, confidence to resist mistreatment and reduce over dependence on their male counterparts hence able to step in to counter harmful decisions e.g. Female genital mutilation, early marriages, as they themselves can be able to provide for their children without depending on their spouses.

Women from this group are also building #climateresilience by using the income-profit from their beadwork business to dig water bunds, establish kitchen gardens etc.
